"Spheres" Public Art
Installation in Indianapolis
A reflection of society in the heart of Indianapolis
In 2023, Skyform Studio introduced Spheres — a contemporary public-art installation for Indianapolis dedicated to individuality and interconnectedness. More than décor, it is an interactive artwork inviting people to see themselves — literally in the mirror finish and metaphorically as part of the community.
Concept & philosophy
Spheres embodies the diversity and complexity of society. Smooth mirror surfaces reflect everyone who approaches, making each visitor part of the composition. The meaning is open: some perceive order and balance, others spontaneity and chance, or a sign of global unity.
Design & artistic language
The composition is a spatial cluster of polished stainless-steel spheres of various diameters. A deliberate asymmetryechoes the unpredictable yet connected nature of society, where each person has a place.
By day, the surfaces reflect sky, people, and city, turning the work into a living picture. By night, dynamic lightingreveals volume and bathes the area in a gentle glow.
Composition & dimensions
Overall installation height: 4 m.
Main sculptural body: 19 spheres, diameters from Ø 0.5 m to Ø 1.0 m. Base breakdown:
- 4 × Ø 1.0 m
- 2 × Ø 0.9 m
- 3 × Ø 0.8 m
- 4 × Ø 0.7 m
- 3 × Ø 0.6 m
- 3 × Ø 0.5 m
Benches in the installation style:
2 benches are included; their supports are 4 load-bearing spheres Ø 0.6 m in the same finish, with integrated lighting(two spheres per bench).
Total on site: 19 spheres in the main body + 4 supporting spheres Ø 0.6 m as part of the benches.
Light & technology
A programmable RGB system enables adaptive scenarios for holidays, city festivals, and seasons — colors flow smoothly, enhancing depth and motion.
Luminaires: 19 units (part embedded in/under spheres, part in the bench zone and surface). Control via DMX/RDM or the client’s ecosystem.
Interactivity
Visitors are encouraged to touch the spheres, feel the cool metal, and see their own reflections, turning observation into a personal experience.
Thanks to built-in sensors, the installation reacts to visitors at night: color and lighting sequences change through interaction, making people part of the artwork.
