In today’s world, cities are looking for new ways to create unique identities and points of attraction for residents and tourists. Kinetic installation is becoming a revolutionary solution that replaces static monuments and sculptures. When the City of Yakima, Washington approached SKYFORM STUDIO to create an iconic kinetic installation, we knew the project would require more than just technical expertise—it required a deep understanding of the psyche of the community.
How the meanings of the city create a kinetic art object
Creating meaningful kinetic installations starts with understanding the intersection of place, history, and community identity. Public art should speak the language of the city and reflect its values and aspirations. For Yakima, we discovered a rich tapestry of stories: a city born from a railroad vision in 1885, transformed from desert to agricultural paradise, and home to a diverse crop of cultures.
The process of creating a kinetic sculpture concept includes several stages:
1. Research of cultural context. We study the history of a place, its geographical features, economic background and cultural diversity. For Yakima, the keys were: railroad heritage, agricultural abundance, irrigation systems and a multicultural community.
2. Search for symbolic connections. Each element of a future moving installation should have a deep symbolic meaning. We are looking for metaphors that resonate with local audiences and at the same time are understandable to visitors.
3. Technical embodiment of meanings.A kinetic installation as an urban landmark requires not only artistic vision, but also engineering excellence. Every movement, every lighting effect should reinforce the underlying idea.
Detailed description of two options made in two different styles
For Yakima, our SKYFORM STUDIO team developed four different concepts, of which we decided to present the two most powerful, from our point of view, to the customer.
"Wings of the Valley" concept - abstract style
The first concept is made in an abstract style and is a kinetic installation measuring 8.2 × 5.1 m, consisting of 44 movable gold-plated aluminum elements. This point of attraction for the modern city creates the image of soaring wings over the landscape of the valley.
INSPIRATION:
Where the train first stopped in 1885, giving birth to North Yakima, the city has wings ready to carry it into the future. “Wings of the Valley” is the embodiment of the soul of the valley through the movement of light and wind.
IN THE HEART OF YAKIMA:
BORN OF LIGHT
Yakima arose from a vision—a railroad that would link the desert to the world. Today, Wings of the Valley continues this tradition of breakthroughs, turning innovation into art that can be seen for miles around.
DANCE OF FERTILITY
Each movement of light repeats the eternal rhythm of the valley: seed – sprout – blossom – fruit. Golden rays rise like the scent of ripe apples, fall like grape leaves, and swirl like the petals of a cherry blossom. It is a symphony of seasons in radiant chords.
BREATH OF THE VALLEY
The winds that have shaped this landscape for millennia now conduct an orchestra of light. Each gust gives birth to a new melody of wings – the installation lives with the breath of the earth itself.
VALLEY LIGHTHOUSE
At night, the installation becomes the constellation of Yakima—a navigation sign for anyone seeking a place where tradition meets innovation, where the land produces not only crops, but also art.
“Wings of the Valley” doesn’t just decorate Yakima – it is Yakima itself, told in the language of light: a story of resilience, fertility and endless striving upward.
KINETIC ARCHITECTURE:
Geometric concept:the installation is a dynamic system of 44 moving elements creating the image of spread wings. Each element can independently change position, forming endless configurations – from diverging rays to complex geometric patterns.
Symbolism of the form:the golden rays of light represent the solar energy of the Yakima Valley, transforming the desert into an oasis of fertility. The movement of the elements imitates flight – from the majestic soaring of eagles over the ridges to the dance of petals carried by the wind.
Interactive poetry: The installation responds to the natural winds of the valley, transforming invisible air currents into a visible choreography of movement and light. Each impulse gives birth to a new form.
PHILOSOPHY:
From rails to heaven:just as the railroad once lifted Yakima from desert to prosperity, the wings of the valley are lifting the city to new artistic heights. This is the evolution of transport: from steam locomotives to the speed of light of dreams.
Flight choreography:66 kinetic winches create smooth wave-like movements that imitate the flight of birds, the swaying of flowering trees in the wind, and the dance of vines. Programmable scenarios allow the installation to “breathe” with the rhythm of the valley.
Magic of day and night:During the day, elements play with sunlight, creating moving shadows and reflections. At night, 10 light cannons turn the wings into a constellation that amazes everyone around.
CULTURAL HERITAGE:
Lighthouse of the future: the installation becomes a navigational sign for all who seek a place where tradition meets innovation, where railway history turns into light art.
Concept: "Five Elements of Yakima" (Symbolic Style)
Philosophy : “Where harmony is born”
The second kinetic installation is made in a symbolic style and presents 66 kinetic modules in the form of dodecahedrons measuring 5.5 × 5.6 m. Each module embodies the five fundamental elements of Yakima:
INSPIRATION:
The pentagon is a symbol of perfection and harmony, where every facet is equal and important. The pentagonal polygons are stars that connect to form the constellation of Yakima’s destiny.
FIVE MAIN ELEMENTS OF YAKIMA:
GENEROUS SUN– the source of all life in the valley. Golden rays transform the desert into an oasis of fertility, creating a unique climate where it is possible to grow a wide variety of crops.
FERTIL SOIL– the heart of American agriculture. The land that produces apples, pears, cherries, grapes, hops and vegetables, feeding the entire country.
WATER ARTERY – gives life to the desert. The Yakima River and a complex irrigation system have transformed the arid region into a green paradise where every drop is worth its weight in gold.
WINDS OF THE VALLEY – an ancient force that has shaped this landscape for millennia. They spread seeds throughout the valley, cool the hot days, bring change. The wind is the breath of the earth itself, the invisible conductor of a natural symphony that makes apple tree leaves dance and grape vines sway.
YAKIMA COMMUNITY– a melting pot of cultures: Native Americans, European settlers, Latin American workers. Different traditions are woven into a single fabric of community where everyone is important.
HARMONY OF THE FIVE ELEMENTS:
The sun provides energy → Earth, which absorbs Water → fertility is born → Wind carries life throughout the valley → Community thrives in harmony with nature → the cycle repeats.
The pentagonal shape symbolizes that no element can exist without the others – it is perfect harmony, where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
KINETIC ARCHITECTURE:
Geometric concept:the installation consists of 66 kinetic modules, each of which is a dodecahedron – a regular polyhedron with 12 pentagonal faces. This sacred geometry embodies the five elements of Yakima in every facet, creating a three-dimensional star of perfect harmony.
Symbolism of the form:The gold coating of the modules emits a warm light, symbolizing the generous sun of the valley and the full spectrum of vital energy. The artistic perforation of each module creates patterns of light, turning functional holes into poetic messages.
Collective metaphor:The 66 modules represent the diversity of the Yakima community—each is unique, but together they form a cohesive constellation. The different movement configurations symbolize the richness of cultures and nations living in the valley.
PHILOSOPHY:
Natural interactivity:The installation uses the wind as a natural activator, allowing nature itself to control the switching on and off of lighting effects. This creates a lively dialogue between art and the environment.
Choreography of light:each module moves in an individual rhythm, forming wave-like patterns and complex geometric shapes. Together they perform the “Dance of the Five Elements of Yakima,” an endlessly changing symphony of movement and light.
CULTURAL HERITAGE:
Souvenir program: a separate module can become a unique city souvenir – a miniature embodiment of the installation, combining the rich history of Yakima with contemporary art.

How a kinetic installation embodies meanings
Kinetic installation has the unique ability to transform abstract concepts into living, breathing forms. Unlike static monuments, kinetic art creates:
Emotional impact.Movement attracts attention and creates an emotional connection with the observer. Each element of our kinetic sculpture tells a story through movement.
Interactivity with the environment. The use of wind and light sensors allows the installation to respond to natural conditions, creating unique performances every day.
Multilevel perception.A kinetic installation as a city landmark works at different levels of perception:
- Daytime: play of light and shadow, reflections, moving patterns
- Night time: dramatic lighting turns the installation into a light show
- Seasonal changes: different movement programs for different seasons
Cultural heritagePublic art should become part of the cultural DNA of the city. Our projects create new traditions and rituals, places of meeting and reflection.
Economic ImpactPoints of attraction in modern cities generate tourist flow, create unique photo zones and contribute to the development of surrounding areas.
