ABOUT THE PROJECT

“Light of Ages” – a large-scale interactive light and music installation dedicated to the history of people who inhabited the territory of modern Kazakhstan for twenty centuries. The project reimagines history not as a set of dates and facts, but as a living process told in the language of light, space and human interaction with architecture.

The installation creates an open public space where the past becomes tangible and history becomes a personal experience.

ARCHITECTURE OF TIME

The composition is based on an ensemble of 20 vertical light columns , each of which symbolizes one century of history. The columns are made of white light-diffusing polycarbonate and are filled with soft, vibrant light, creating a feeling of presence and depth.

On the surface of the columns there are gold metal rings of different diameters and widths – visual layers of time. They reflect the density of life, the accumulation of experience and the memory of generations. The height of each column is directly related to the population of the corresponding century, forming an intuitively readable landscape of time .

The composition is not built into a linear route: the space is organized freely, allowing a person to independently choose the path and enter into dialogue with different eras.

PEOPLE AND NAMES

Each column contains brief information about its century: the designation of the period, population, average life expectancy, the nature of the era and the way of life of people. Particular attention is paid names of prominent personalities — thinkers, scientists, poets, rulers, cultural and social figures who made a significant contribution to the development of the region. The project emphasizes that the history of a country is created not by abstract processes, but by specific people and their destinies.

INTERACTIVE AND DIALOGUE WITH VEKOM

“Light of Ages” responds to human touch. At the moment of contact inside the column, an individual light scenario and sound response are triggered, creating a feeling of dialogue between a person and an era. Each interaction is unique: light and sound change, as if the column tells its story in a special language. The space is filled with a multi-layered sound image, reflecting the rhythm, character and emotional background of the time.

History is not observed here from the outside – she is living .

WHY INTERACTIVITY IS CRITICALLY IMPORTANT

The interactive form was chosen deliberately: it allows a person to become part of the story, and not its passive spectator. Physical touch creates an emotional connection to the past, uniting generations through personal experience. This format makes history physical, alive and memorable – one that cannot be achieved through a book, screen or lecture.

A NEW POINT OF ATTRACTION AND A CULTURAL SYMBOL

“Light of Ages” designed as new point of attraction for residents of the country and tourists from all over the world. The installation becomes a place for meetings, walks, contemplation and dialogue, as well as a powerful visual and cultural accent of the urban environment. The project is designed for long-term life in the city space, attracting millions of visitors and becoming a source of photographs and videos that will be distributed on social networks, forming a recognizable image of the country beyond its borders.

EDUCATIONAL MISSION

The installation serves as a unique educational space. Here schoolchildren and students will be able not only to learn historical facts, but feel the scale of time , realize the value of human life and responsibility to future generations.

The project fosters respect for history, the memory of ancestors and cultural heritage.

MOBILE APPLICATION – HISTORY IN YOUR PHONE

A special mobile application is being developed for the installation, which expands the physical space in a digital format. The application allows you to:

• get detailed information about each century;
• learn about key events, people and culture of the era;
• dive deeper into historical context through texts, audio and visual materials.

The application will be available in several languages, making the project understandable and accessible to an international audience.

FINAL IDEA OF THE PROJECT

“Light of Ages” is the story of people told by light. A space where every century becomes a living interlocutor, and every person becomes part of the greater history of their country.
