KINETIC ART INSTALLATION AND OPEN-AIR MUSEUM
Coins of the World is a large-scale kinetic art installation that transforms public space into an open-air museum experience.
The project explores the history of nations, cultures, and civilizations through one of humanity’s most universal symbols — the coin. The installation incorporates 800 different coins from around the world, each representing a unique fragment of history. More than currency, these objects reflect political power, cultural identity, artistic traditions, trade, historical events, and the spirit of their time.
By bringing together coins from different countries and eras, the installation reveals how societies have evolved from ancient civilizations and empires to the modern world. As a result, the project functions not only as a visually compelling artwork but also as an educational environment that encourages curiosity, learning, and cultural discovery.
EXPLORING HISTORY THROUGH COINS
Throughout history, coins have served as miniature records of civilization. They have portrayed rulers, deities, coats of arms, architecture, animals, national symbols, historical milestones, and cultural achievements.
Every coin tells a story about a specific place, period, tradition, or people.
Coins of the World brings hundreds of these stories together within a single installation. Visitors encounter not merely a decorative composition but a visual representation of world history assembled through authentic historical references.
The sculpture attracts attention through its scale, kinetic movement, metallic surfaces, and lighting effects. As visitors move closer, they begin discovering details, recognizing familiar countries, identifying symbols and dates, and uncovering connections between different cultures and eras. This process naturally encourages exploration, conversation, photography, and repeat visits.
A NEW TYPE OF OUTDOOR MUSEUM
Coins of the World introduces a contemporary approach to cultural engagement in public space.
Unlike traditional museums, the installation is freely accessible and integrated into everyday urban life. It can be located in parks, plazas, waterfronts, cultural districts, tourist destinations, residential developments, and public gathering spaces.
Some visitors may simply enjoy the artwork as a striking visual landmark. Others may spend time exploring the individual coins and learning about their historical significance through digital content.
In this way, history moves beyond museum walls and becomes part of the daily experience of the city.
DIGITAL LAYER AND MOBILE APPLICATION
A dedicated mobile application can enhance the educational dimension of the installation.
Using QR codes or barcodes, visitors can access information about individual coins featured within the artwork.
The application may include:
• country of origin;
• year or historical period of issue;
• historical background;
• interpretation of symbols and imagery;
• interesting facts and stories;
• maps and geographic information;
• audio guides;
• educational content for children, students, and tourists.
Through this digital layer, the installation evolves into an interactive museum experience that can be explored both physically and digitally.
KINETICS, LIGHT, AND MATERIALS
The installation consists of 800 kinetic aluminum coins suspended within a spatial metal structure.
Natural movement, reflections, light, and shadow create the impression of a constantly changing surface. The artwork appears different throughout the day as sunlight interacts with the metallic elements.
After dark, an integrated RGB lighting system transforms the installation into an illuminated landmark. Different lighting programs can create subtle museum-style illumination, warm bronze and gold tones, dynamic color waves, highlighted zones, and decorative evening displays.
An additional conceptual layer is created by 13 bronze coins integrated into the ground surface. These elements can represent important historical periods, countries, events, or themes connected to the project, allowing visitors to literally walk through history as they move across the site.
ADAPTABLE TO DIFFERENT CITIES AND STORIES
While the primary concept focuses on world currencies and historical periods, the platform itself can be adapted to virtually any city, institution, or territory.
The same approach can be used to explore:
• local history;
• significant historical figures;
• architectural landmarks;
• cultural traditions;
• local legends;
• important events;
• trade and industry;
• tourism routes.
For example, instead of world currencies, a collection of custom “city coins” could be created, with each coin representing a notable place, person, event, or story. In this format, the installation becomes a visual encyclopedia of the city and a distinctive symbol of place.
APPLICATIONS
Coins of the World is particularly suitable for locations seeking to create a memorable cultural and tourist destination.
The installation can be integrated into:
• city parks;
• public squares;
• waterfront developments;
• historic districts;
• museum precincts;
• cultural campuses;
• universities;
• hotels and resorts;
• residential developments;
• exhibitions;
• forums;
• festivals.
The project simultaneously functions as a public artwork, educational attraction, photo destination, illuminated sculpture, and open-air museum exhibition.
